Ultraviolet Sanitization

Ultraviolet treatment photo-oxidizes and destroys combined chlorine(chloromenes) and other pollutants as the water passes around a powerful UV tube, giving major improvements to your pool environment and water quality, with significant reduction in the need for other chemical sanitization. UV light provides ecologically safe non-chemical disinfection, giving effective primary control over waterborne bacteria, benefiting both public and private applications.

Applications

The UV unit can be used in conjuntion with any other pool sanitization, private or commercial, and provides another level of protection and treatment to your pool water. Drenching the water as it passes through in sun-like ultraviolet light, harmful bacterias and pollutants are elliminated, leaving you with sparkling, radiant water, full of energy.

6The Delta Ultraviolet Elektra® E Series of UV sanitizers is the first UV sanitizer line designed specifically for swimming pool application. With its generous eight inch (203.2 mm) diameter 100% PVC wet chamber design, the Elektra E Series can accommodate pools up to 89,000 gallons (337961 liters) when 12 hour pool turnover is needed or up to 59500 gallons (225307 liters) for semi-commercial application where 8 hour pool turnover is required. Unlike small undersized units heretofore available for swimming pools, these larger capacities can be accomplished without making multiple units necessary and without the higher operation costs that multiple lamp units would require.
Suitable for both Indoor and Outdoor installation, as well as either fresh or salt water environments, the E Series is available in both 120V and 240V 50/60 Hz models (Using less electricity than a 40 watt bulb)   Metric size unions are available (See Product Data Sheet for voltage and union size model designations).  Like all Delta Ultraviolet Systems, the E Series bears the Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. US and Canadian Listed label, the CE mark, as well as the EPA Logo and product marking. This is your assurance that Delta UV has complied with US Government regulations for pesticide devices.
Installation in the pool circulation system is very easy and is quickly accomplished thanks to the PVC unions and integral mounting base for floor mounting, both supplied as standard features on the E Series. Each E Series system comes supplied with a 60 inch (152.4 cm.) power cord,  All 120V systems are plug-in, and 240V systems are hard wired.  Four separate models are available, as each model accommodates a larger size pool then the previous model number.  While designed primarily for swimming pools, the Elektra E Series is equally at home when used for sanitation of water features, reflective or planted ponds, spas, fountains, or Koi ponds.

7

8The Delta Ultraviolet Elektra ® ES Series is an upgrade from the Elektra E Series. While all internal components of both units are identical, the ES Series features a mirror polished Stainless Steel exterior shell, and a Stainless Steel interior reflective liner. This liner increases the reflective value from the UV Lightwave radiation of the high output ultraviolet lamp inside the ES Series. This added reflection provides a greater margin for operating degradation should the UV bulb not be changed after 9000 hours of use, or should turbid water be encountered inside the UV unit wet chamber.  This added margin of operation safety can be had at a very low additional cost over the E Series, which makes the ES Series our most popular Swimming Pool UV sanitizing system.
All E and ES Series units are identical in output and capacity. That is, an Elektra E-10 and Elektra ES-10 are identical in output and capacity (except as noted above). The same four models (sizes) are available in the ES Series that are available in the E Series. Each unit bears the Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. Listing Mark for US and Canada as well as the CE mark for Europe and the required EPA Manufacturers Registration. For additional information on the ES Series, we invite you click on the E Series link above to see the ES Series features that are common with the E Series, and then to the CUSTOMER CARE link, where you will find the ES Series Data Sheet,  Owner & Installation manual,  Limited Warranty, Brochure, and other pertinent information on the Delta Ultraviolet ES Series UV system.
At last, there is no need to settle for undersized units that require multiple units on your project.  With the Elektra E and ES Series ultraviolet sanitizing systems broad range of sizes, there is a single UV system just right for your application.  Start enjoying the benefits of UV sanitation on your swimming pool, pond, spa, or water feature tod

9

10In addition to it's low pressure UV systems, Delta Ultraviolet offers its medium pressure Elektra® MAX Series (EM) commercial systems for large public pools, water parks, and large lakes and ponds. The EM Series is available in nine different sizes to accommodate flow rates from 200 Gallons Per Minute (GPM) up to 4400 GPM. Each model comprises two main components. The first component is the stainless steel UV reactor and the second component is the electronic control panel housing the microprocessor control system and various electro-mechanical components.
The UV reactor, or chamber, is fabricated from highly polished 316 stainless steel, with inlet/outlet flanged connections ranging from 3" to 14" pipe size for low pressure loss installation. In addition, the reactor design incorporates sophisticated features, such as EZ-Install lamp connections, and a Patented SmartWipeT automatic quartz tube wiping system. This UV reactor chamber design is compact and allows for ease of maintenance should it be required in the years ahead. Delta UV also provides full field on-site support for all installed systems.
The heart of the EM Series is the Microprocessor control system. Housed in a rugged NEMA enclosure, the control system features direct LED read-outs, with a large variety of operator or factory set custom operations available. Features such as an energy saving low-use period (nighttime) automatic lamp power down option, remote controls and alarms, 12 month data logging (remote downloadable) of system operation history, UV lamp output reading and low output alarm, and UV sensor are just a few of the capabilities of the EM systems solid-state control.
With 60 mJ lamp output (at lamp end-of-life) and with the broad UV light spectrum capabilities of Delta's medium pressure lamps, the user can count on this system to dramatically reduce or even nearly eliminate chloramines. In addition, a major benefit of the system is substantial improvement to the natatorium air environment by utilizing the EM System's capability to provide dechloramineation as well as disinfection. This is what makes us UNIQUE
CL Free Digital Water Systems has two components inside its Flow Cell.First, CL Free Digital Water Systems has developed a process that actually splits the water molecule into OXYGEN (OH) and HYDROGEN. This process is called Oxidation. This OXYGEN takes the place of Chlorine as the sanitizer. Oxidation is achieved by water passing through the CL Free Flow Cell while a very low volt D/C electrical current is sent to the coated TITANIUM/PLATINUM plates in the chamber.
4
While in this mode, the process of electrolysis causes the electro-physical separation of water molecule. This separation forms free oxygen atoms and hydroxyl (OH). This process creates a combination of the most powerful oxidizers available for water disinfections. These oxidizers, the oxygen atoms and hydroxyl ions, are responsible for eliminating body oils, sun tan lotions and as well as the dead organic matter.
The second part of the process is Copper Ionization. After the water molecule is split it then passes over 100% Copper plates that are charged with the same low volt D.C. current. While in this mode, Copper ions are released. Copper ionization is the most effective form of algae and fungal control available on the market today. The copper content is kept at a very low .5 to .7 parts per million. This amount of copper is less than 25% of the E.P.A. required intake recommended daily. You could actually drink up to two gallons of your pool water every day and you would have no more Copper intake that a common multi-vitamin.
The CL Free system produces oxidizers, measured in grams per minute. Additionally, each CLFree oxidizer is more powerful than sodium hypochlorite, the dominant form of Chlorine.

We Care about your Health -We Care about your Filtration System.

Cartridge Filters: (Most common yet least effective filtration system)
Cartridge filters are the least efficient and end up costing more in the long run than other filters.
Because even the best cartridge system will only filter out 20-40 microns, it simply will not remove particles smaller than 20 microns. Most dead organic material such as Bacteria, viruses, blood cells, algae is less than 8-9 microns in size.

Why would anyone use a filtration system that lets this dead organic material pass through?
Owners of Chlorine pools may choose this type of filter unaware of its inadequacy because it is inexpensive.
The cartridge filter element, an aquatic version of the pleated air cleaner in your car, traps dirt and particles of 25-40 microns in size. The cartridge is removed from the tank and hosed thoroughly, top to bottom, with a high pressure hose to remove dirt when the pressure gauge rises 8-10 lbs. above its initial clean reading. Each time the filter is cleaned, some of its filtering ability is reduced. The cartridge should be replaced every 12-18 months, depending on its workload. An undersized filter with algae and tree debris may last only 6 -12 months.

Sand Filters:
Normal sand filters will only remove particles down to 40-100 microns (similar to a cartridge filter), it will not remove the dead organic material which are much smaller (under 8-9 microns) and pass right through the sand and back into your pool.

Diatomaceous Earth:
(DE) filters: The DE filter is the most efficient type of pool filter on the market despite the expense. It can trap particles down to 2-7 microns; well below what the naked eye can see. There is a pressure gauge that will indicate when you need backwashing. After backwashing a DE filter, a new application of DE filter powder is added to the filter by pouring into the skimmer. An annual or semi-annual breakdown of the filter is necessary to thoroughly clean DE filter grids.
A DE filter requires that the operator (you) add DE powder to coat the filter grids inside of the filter tank. The powder, which is added at your skimmer, dissolves in the pipe on its way to the filter tank. When it reaches the fabric covered grids, the powder stops, thus coating the grid. The water continues to pass through, first through the powder, then the fabric covered grid. As the water passes through the DE and
enters the grid it leaves the dirt, trapped in the DE powder “cake” or coating.
The DE powder is what filters your pool water in a DE filter. Eventually the flow rate will allow the water quality to suffer. You will need to backwash the filter to remove the DE that is clogged with the dirt. After backwashing thoroughly, add new DE powder to the filter through the skimmer. This is the BEST filtration system you can buy.

The Dangers of Chlorine

History of Chlorine
Chlorine was discovered in 1774 by Swedish chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele, who called it, dephlogisticated marine acid and mistakenly thought it contained oxygen. Chlorine was given its current name in 1810 by Sir Humphrey Davy, who insisted that it was in fact an element. Chlorine gas, also known as bertholite, was first used as a weapon against humans  in World War I by Germany on April 22nd, 1915 in the  Second Battle of Ypres. It was pioneered by a German scientist later to be a Nobel laureate, Fritz Haber. It  is alleged that his role in the use of chlorine as a deadly weapon drove his wife to suicide. After its first use, it was utilized by both sides as a chemical weapon. Chlorine became the first killing agent employed during World War I. German chemical conglomerate IG Farben had been producing chlorine as a by-product of their dye manufacturing. In cooperation with Fritz Haber of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Chemistry in Berlin, they developed methods of discharging chlorine gas against an entrenched enemy.
Chlorine is a toxic gas that irritates the respiratory system.
How Chlorine Works
 The extent of poisoning caused by chlorine depends on the amount of chlorine a person is exposed
to, how the person was exposed, and the length of time of the exposure.
 When chlorine gas comes into contact with moist tissues such as the eyes, throat, and lungs, an
acid is produced that can damage these tissues.
In its elemental form under standard conditions, it is a pale green gas about 2.5 times as dense as
air. It has a disagreeable suffocating odor and is poisonous. Chlorine is a powerful oxidant and is
used in bleaching and disinfectants. It is also used in swimming pools to keep them clean.

Health Hazards
Chlorine gas is primarily a respiratory irritant. In sufficient concentration, the gas irritates the mucous membranes, the respiratory tract and the eyes. In extreme cases difficulty in breathing may increase to the point where death can occur from respiratory collapse or lung failure. The characteristic, penetrating odor of chlorine gas usually gives warning of its presence in the air. Also at high concentrations, it is visible as a greenish yellow gas. Liquid chlorine in contact with skin or eyes will cause chemical burns and/or frostbite.
Pool Problems
Always use care when opening a container of chlorine. Breathing in chlorine gas can knock you right out, and could be fatal. Always wear protective handling gear such as eye protection and rubber gloves. If chlorine touches your skin, you should wash it off to prevent irritation. If chlorine splashes in the eye, irrigate with water and contact a physician straight away. The label on the chlorine container will also tell you never, never, never mix chlorine with any other chemical. You could produce something of a bomb or even napalm. This includes mixing two different types of chlorine, or chlorine and bromine. KABOOM! Dirt, debris or any foreign substance (algaecides, alkalis and acids, etc.) can cause spontaneous combustion when mixed with chlorine. FIRE!
Let’s compare CL Free Digital Water Systems to

other products and the most common chemicals on the market today
Chlorine or Bromine Chemicals
Chlorine, for now, is the most popular means of sanitizing swimming pool water. It does an excellent job sanitizing water, but it does so at a huge price.
Chlorine is a very caustic, corrosive chemical. It is effective because it attacks anything organic. Unfortunately, it also attacks the skin, hair, and eyes of the humans swimming in it.
Chlorine is toxic and hazardous to handle, ingest or breathe. It is also dangerous to store. Chlorine can be extremely flammable.
Chloramines, a by-product of chlorine and organic waste, are known carcinogens. Unfortunately there is no practical way of preventing chloramines from forming in chlorinated swimming pools.
Maintaining chlorine levels at minimal acceptable levels can be very difficult to do at times. Residual chlorine is highly affected by the water temperature, rain, pH, and number of swimmers. Chlorine is absorbed in the skin of swimmers and therefore the more people that swim in the pool, the more chlorine is absorbed by their skin and the more chlorine that needs to be added to the pool water to properly sanitize the water.
Mineral or Catalytic Cartridge System
Mineral cartridge systems are sold under the following trademarked names: Nature2, Vision, and FROG. These products kill contaminants, primarily bacteria, in the water as it passes through a cartridge. This means the pump and filter must run for long periods of time to treat the tens of thousands of gallons of water in a swimming pool. Pool suppliers, who sell these systems, often recommend that you run your pump and filter 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
While, these systems do reduce the need for chlorine or other chemical oxidizing treatment, they do not eliminate the need for these chemicals.
These systems also require a trip to the pool store to purchase expensive cartridges. In some cases more than one cartridge may be needed in one season. There is no obvious way to determine when these cartridges fail to be effective. Their effectiveness may expire prior to the cartridge contents being totally depleted.
Ozone Generators
Ozone generators use a special ultra-violet light to kill bacteria. Like the cartridge systems mentioned above, ozone generators only kill contaminants in the ozone chamber and provide no residual protection to the water in the pool. To be effective, the pool pump must run almost all of the time.
Ozone units designed for swimming pools are very expensive and draw a lot of electric current. These units are better suited for spas but are not practical for the volume of water in most swimming pools.
Even the best ozone units do not totally eliminate the need for chlorine or other chemical oxidizing agents in the pool water.
Salt or Brine Chlorine Generators
Salt generators basically produce chlorine from salt. While salt generators require that you purchase salt instead of chlorine, you are still swimming in chlorine and you will experience all of the problems you will experience swimming in a chlorine pool.
Salt generators are expensive devices and consume a lot of electrical current. Salt generators are also very corrosive and the generator chamber has a limited life and is expensive to replace.

Why CL Free is preferred by Pool Owners over Salt-to-Chlorine Systems
  Swimmers prefer the feel and taste of water treated with the CL Free Water System over water treated with salt-to-chlorine generators by an overwhelming margin.
  CL free systems work within a calcium hardness range of 150-2,000 ppm. Because it converts calcium to bicarbonate, we significantly reduce calcium scaling on pool walls and rock features. Salt-to-chlorine generators do not control calcium scaling and will only work within a calcium range of 200-400 ppm.
     Since salt-to-chlorine systems produce chlorine, the sanitizing effectiveness of the system is impacted by changes in temperature, bather load, sunlight and rainfall. Changes in any of these factors may require additional “shocking” of the water to prevent an algae outbreak. CL Free’s effectiveness is not significantly affected by these factors. A CL Free owner does not have to be concerned about doing anything different to treat their pool if they have 20 kids in the pool all day. The pool water will still provide bacterial and algae protection for a full week or more.
  Vinyl liners, automated pool covers and solar covers may become damaged from the use of chlorine or salt-to-chlorine generators. Since the CL Free system does not require the use of harmful oxidizing chemicals, these expensive pool components can be expected to last their normal life expectancy.
  Salt-to-chlorine generators will use an average of 500 watts of AC power for a 20,000 gallon pool. CL Free systems will use an average of only 35-40 watts of DC power to treat the same amount of water.
  Salt-to-chlorine generators and the CL Free system both use a chamber in their process. The difference is that a salt-to-chlorine generator cell may need to be replaced in 2-5 years at a cost of over $400-$800. The salt chamber must be cleaned as often as once a week. The copper bars in the CL Free chamber cost around $100 to replace and they should last 2-4 years. The CL Free chamber is warranted for 5 years and should last indefinitely.
 The backwash discharge from a CL Free treated pool is safe for use on lawns and in gardens
since it does not contain any salt or sodium. Backwash from pools treated with salt-to-chlorine generators can kill plant life, sterilize soil preventing plant growth and is prohibited in many municipalities in the United States and Australia (where salt-to-chlorine systems were invented).
Biaguanide Chemical Products
Water purification additives containing biaguanide chemicals are sold under the trademarked names of Baquacil and Soft Swim. The active ingredient in these products is known as biaguanide. Unlike chlorine, biaguanide is not an oxidizer, so it does not irritate your body by reacting or "burning up" organic contaminants the way chlorine does.
Biaguanide does provide a higher quality of water than chlorine treatment but it is very, very expensive.8 Sometimes costing several times more than chlorine. Biaguanide needs to be purchased in bulky containers and needs to be manually added to the pool water regularly. After prolonged use of biaguanide, most pool owners complain that it takes more and more of the product to achieve the desired water quality. Pool owners also mention that the product causes a unique odor in the water after extended use.

The CL Free Digital Pool Water System Advantage!
Save $1000’s Over the Life of Your Pool…The System Pays for Itself.
Our system costs less than $1 per month to operate, not to mention

electrical savings from reduced filtration time. Once you install our 100% Chlorine-Free system, you will have major savings by eliminating chemical expenses. The CL Free system requires no chemicals to sanitize you pool. You will also save countless hours every season since there is no need to buy, store and add chemicals to your pool.
Crystal Clear, Sparkling Water

The look and feel of pool treated using the CL Free system is incredibly soft, clear and feels so refreshing. After experiencing the CL Free difference you will wonder why every pool isn’t installed with the CL Free system. You will never be able to go back to a chemical or salt system again. There are many reasons to convert to the CL Free system, but none are nearly as important as providing your family and friends with the opportunity to enjoy your pool without having to be exposed to health hazards associated with chlorine and some of the other chlorine alternatives.
CL Free’s ionization and oxidation is superior to chemical or salt treatment; Copper does not dissipate as Chlorine does and is more effective in killing bacteria, molds, virus’ and other bugs. Additionally, oxidation is required to eliminate the organics in the water (skin, air debris etc…). CL Free offers the complete technology with ionic and Oxidation Purification, a two stage process: first the catadyne process that is similar to ionization and second, the CL Free’s anodyne with chemical-free oxidation. Water balance is much easier to maintain, and no chemicals are needed for disinfection. CL Free is able to accomplish electronic oxidation through the use of titanium electrodes, requiring no halogen supplement.

Systems

CL Free Water Systems Pool/Spa System sanitizes and protects your pool water and gives you a chlorine and salt free swimming experience. The system eliminates chlorine, chemicals and other impurities from your water. As it freshens and sanitizes your water, the system also kills and protects your water from bacteria and algae by adding copper ions and oxidizing carbon based impurities in the water with titanium created OH. The CL Free Water Systems Pool/Spa System significantly reduces the calcium buildup in the pool equipment and along the pool and spa water lines.

  1. The power settings for the Oxidation and Ionization functions are independent. This provides flexibility and total control. Other units tie both sets of functions to each other providing no flexibility or independent control.
  2. Oxidation and Ionization functions are energized at the same time. Other units make you manually select and switch between which functions/plates are energized.
  3. LEDs flash at different frequencies to indicate that the corresponding functions have been activated and at what power level. Faster flash means higher power.
  4. LEDs alternate color (red and green) to indicate that the polarity of the functions/plates has been switched. This swap balances the copper plate usage and helps keep the plates clean.
  5. Copper Ionization has a built-in startup setting (to quickly bring your pool/spa up to the desired copper level) and 8 different maintenance settings (to maintain the desired copper level). If the system is run nonstop, after 24 hours it resets itself and begins its daily cycle again.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I order your systems?
Order requests can be made via the telephone

Is Copper in the water safe for me?
Absolutely. We run our pools at 25% of the safe drinking water levels according to the EPA.
Is water with ionized Copper in it safe to drink?
Yes! In fact, if you look at the label on your multiple vitamin bottle, you'll see that 2 milligrams is the recommended minimum daily value amount of copper.
Can I drink too much Copper water?
Only by drowning! You would have to drink 2.64 gallons of water per day, (42.3 eight ounce glasses of water), just to get 100% of your minimum daily value amount requirement of copper.
Is Copper good for my plants?
Yes. Copper is good and necessary for your plants. Hydroponic farms add much higher doses of Copper to their nutrient solutions than we do.
What does the EPA say about Copper in drinking water?
The EPA's Maximum Contaminant Level Goals (MCLG) is desirable, non-enforceable, health-based goals established to assure a safe water supply. Water containing any chemical in an amount equal to or below its MCLG is not expected to cause any health problems, even over a lifetime of ingestion. The current MCLG for copper in drinking water is 1.30 ppm (parts per million). Your CFWS Whole House System is designed to maintain your drinking water at between 0.15 and
0.20 ppm, just 13% of the EPA's MCLG.
Is this a water softener?
No. Water softeners use salt (either sodium chloride or potassium chloride) to create sodium or potassium ions which exchange with the calcium ions in the calcium carbonate suspended in the water, thus removing the "hard" part of the water. Our system changes suspended calcium carbonate into calcium bi-carbonate, which can then precipitate or fall out of solution. Small amounts of water spotting may occur, but are easily wiped or rinsed away.
What are the service requirements and/or expendables?
Based on your water's hardness and other factors, the plates will need cleaning once or twice a year. The copper plates will need replacement every three to five years depending on usage. The titanium plates do not wear out and should never need replacement.
Is the system easy to install and operate?
Yes. The installation can easily be completed in about 1 hour. Operation of the system requires weekly testing of the pH and copper in the pool water.
How long do the copper bars last and how much do they cost to replace?
Life of the copper bars will depend on the length of your pool season, the calcium hardness of the water and the size of your pool. Normally, they will last 2-4 years and cost about $100 to replace. They can be replaced by the pool owner in a few minutes with a screw driver.
Will the copper stain my pool?
The amount of copper being added to your pool is significantly less than would begin to cause staining.
If I purchase the CL Free Digital Water System with Co2 where can I buy the CO²?
CO² can be purchased from air supply companies, beverage companies or welding supply companies. Depending on the company, you may have the option of either purchase a tank or rent one. In many markets, these companies will actually come to your house on a regular basis and change your tanks out for you. Some pool owners simply purchase

 frequently asked questions

Q: Is Copper in the water safe for me?
A: Absolutely. We run our pools at 25% of the safe drinking water levels according to the EPA. In fact, if you drank 2 gallons of pool water, you would ingest the amount of copper found in a multiple-vitamin.

Q: Is water with ionized Copper in it safe to drink?
A: Yes! In fact, if you look at the label on your multiple vitamin bottle, you'll see that 2 milligrams is the recommended minimum daily value amount of copper.

Q: Can I drink too much Copper water?
A: Only by drowning! You would have to drink 2.64 gallons of water per day, (42.3 eight ounce glasses of water), just to get 100% of your minimum daily value amount requirement of copper.

Q: Is Copper good for my plants?
A: Yes. Copper is good and necessary for your plants. Hydroponic farms add much higher doses of Copper to their nutrient solutions than we do.

Q: What does the EPA say about Copper in drinking water?
A: The EPA's Maximum Contaminant Level Goals (MCLG) is desirable, non-enforceable, health-based goals established to assure a safe water supply. Water containing any chemical in an amount equal to or below its MCLG is not expected to cause any health problems, even over a lifetime of ingestion. The current MCLG for copper in drinking water is 1.30 ppm (parts per million). Your CFWS Whole House System is designed to maintain your drinking water at between 0.15 and 0.20 ppm, just 13% of the EPA's MCLG.
